In 2016, Chicago saw more murders than NY and LA combined. Comedian and political critic, W. Kamau Bell visited his hometown to explore solutions on his CNN special, “United Shades of America”, which aired Sunday night.

First the program highlighted Chicago’s upper class northend where schools are great and violence is low. Then came Chicago’s Southside…

Dr. Bell called on 6-time Grammy Winner, G.O.O.D. Music’s Malik Yusef to unite some of Chicago’s leaders and discuss solutions. Malik brought together a round-table of rival gang members from various Chicago communities. Before the meeting even began, the violence that plagues Chicago every day became ever so real, as one of the leader scheduled to attend the round-table was shot.

Malik Yusef later brought together some of Chicago’s most influential artists including Roc Nation’s Vic Mensa, Lil Durk, The Legendary Fya Man, Wild Wild Da General, G Syl, and others. The group discussed the reasons the violence is happen – and solutions to change things. Vic Mensa believes “Solutions have to come down to investing in the community.” The group ended with a prayer, with Chicago rappers of past and present joining hands in unity.
