Steel Matik – Try me

Steel Matik continues to blow up East Coast with new music

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Born and raised in Alexandria, Virginia, Leandru Toney – AKA Steel Matik – has had a rough upbringing. But that is the very thing that defines him as an artist, and it’s the source of lyrics and vibes that are turning heads all along the East Coast.

Losing his father at a young age and helping care for his sick mother in the projects of northern Virginia left Steel hardened and street savvy. His experiences with real life struggles and successes are the main focus of his music. He entered the music scene in 2012 with a bang with his single “Doin’ Me,” followed soon after by the mixtape “Illegal Tender.” In the years since his music has continued to provide real, raw content with thoughtful lyrics for fans all over the world. His most recent submission to the world is his EP “Drugs, Money & Violence Vol. 2.”

“It’s a project that’s just me and my day-to-day,” he said. “I’ve got a thing where I can’t rap about it if I’m not living it or doing it, and this project is about me going through my town, or seeing things on social media, or watching the way my culture might move, and then speaking about it through my music.”

More than anything Steel is first and foremost a lyricist. His career started with poetry that he wrote after the passing of his father. As he got older, those poems began to be molded by beats, and as the beats got louder the words changed. Today he considers himself to be an artist who is “open minded and all over the place.”

“I’m intellectual, I’m into politics, and I like to stay sharp so that when I speak people know the truth,” he said. “Every day I wake up I’m gonna show you something. And at the end of the day my music will always have substance. You’ll be able to listen to my music and relate – you’ll get that emotion and feeling that you’re not the only one on the earth who feels a certain way or who goes through a certain situation. And you’re going to get that in a real down-to-earth, street delivery.”

While riding the waves of success from his EP launched this summer, Steel Matik has been hard at work on new music. He has a new project called “Jack Moves 2” that he hopes to release this fall, and he’s working on yet another mixtape called “In God We Trust” that he’s planning on releasing on Black Friday. There are also music videos and more singles in the works for the next few months.
