It is often said that there is nothing better a writer can do than to read widely, and nothing better a painter can do than to study lots of examples of other people’s work. The same is true for a musician. Formal education can only take musicians so far, the best (with and without it) are those whose diligence or passion persuades them to explore music on their own, especially across diverse cultures. Listening to diverse music isn’t all about deliberately seeking out ideas it’s about feeding the imagination, then sitting back and letting ideas flow on their own. Exploring music like this is an excellent way to find hidden inspiration.

Bringing together traditional instrumental styles with modern audio effects, even things as simple as slowing them down or upping the bass, can also create really striking sounds.
