In life, it’s important to be as confident as possible, both within yourself and to those around you. Some people have confidence naturally and others can be shy, but this doesn’t mean you don’t have confidence in other areas. If you are looking to improve the way you are and feel around others and become more confident, there are a few things you can do. By displaying this trait it can help you in many aspects, from feeling better about yourself, to your communication, to how you do at work. If you are looking to improve your confidence, we have put together some top tips that should help you get there in no time at all.
Recognize your strengths
One of the first things you need to do if you are looking to improve your confidence is to recognize your own strengths. Too often we don’t see what we are good at and tend to just focus on our negatives or the points that we perceive to be negative. As the famous quote says, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”Instead, think of what you excel at already and see what you can do to build this skill and enhance it to be even better. If you are a talented photographer for example, why not go out, take some photos and keep practicing? You could sell them or start up a photography Instagram. The same goes for if you’re into baking, writing or something else – by improving the talents you already have you will see just how fantastic you are and build your confidence this way.
A lot of people find their confidence wanes when they aren’t looking after themselves. If you are constantly eating unhealthy food, not getting enough rest, and not exercising, you might have put weight on and look tired. This can leave you feeling down and you know you aren’t looking as good as you could. To combat this, why not start by doing some gentle exercise? Whether you decide to go on a gentle run, workout using dumbbells, or head to a gym class, there are so many things you can do to start your fitness journey. Make sure to keep track of your progress so you can see how far you’ve come. You should also try and eat as healthily as possible, getting at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables every day and drinking eight glasses of water. Ensure you also get at least eight hours of sleep a night so you are well-rested and ready to face whatever the next day throws at you. You will soon notice the difference in your body, complexion, and also your mental health, meaning your confidence will rise and you’ll feel a lot better about yourself in no time at all.
Work on your mental health
Your mental health plays a big part in improving your confidence and you must take good care of it. There are many ways you can improve your mental health and it’s a good idea to find out the one that works best for you. If you are eating healthily and getting exercise, this is great, but you also need to do things such as be social and take part in hobbies that you love. Speak to friends and family regularly and be sure to tell them if there is anything in your life that is bothering you or getting you down. They can help you to put things into perspective and make you feel happier and better about it, or advise you on what to do if you are stuck in a downward spiral before it gets any worse. You could try something such as keeping a journal or diary where you write down your thoughts and feelings. This is a great way to offload and feel better about things that are going on, but still, keep it private if this is something you want to do. Once you take care of your mental health, you will find you feel a lot more confident in general.
Don’t be afraid to say no
If you are a people-pleaser, which, let’s face it, many of us are, then you might struggle to say no to people and plans. This can lead to you double-booking things, feeling overwhelmed, and being completely burnt out, which is no good to anyone, most of all yourself. Saying no to things can be daunting at first, but soon you will find that prioritizing certain things and saying no to others will make you feel a lot happier and more confident. It doesn’t need to be a bad thing and people will always understand, so try not to build it up too much in your head.
Change your mindset – people care what you have to say
If you are feeling shy and like you don’t want to talk as people “won’t care” what you have to say, remind yourself that this isn’t true. Try to step out of your comfort zone and say things that contribute to conversations instead of staying quiet. You will find that this helps generate conversation and the more you join in, the easier it will become and the more confident you will feel. Never feel stupid for getting involved whether this is at work or in a personal social setting.
Stop comparing yourself to others
One of the worst things you can do for your confidence is to compare yourself to others. Everyone has insecurities, doubts, and fears and no matter how confident they might come across on the outside, they might be the total opposite on the inside. Don’t compare yourself and instead just work on how to make yourself feel happier. Yes, a certain person might be super talented at one thing, but remember how great you are at something else. We all have our own strengths and weaknesses.
Surround yourself with people that make you feel happy
In life, we all meet people who make us feel happy and those that we leave from seeing and just feel drained. Try to focus on those that make you smile and you leave feeling positive and happy. If you have to change yourself to fit in or feel like you don’t belong, this can really knock your confidence and be no good for anyone. Take a step back and reevaluate who is worthy of you spending your time with.
These are just a few things that you can do to improve your confidence in your work and your personal life. Applying them can feel daunting at first but take it slow and you are sure to see a difference in no time at all. Being confident doesn’t necessarily mean you are the loudest person in the room, it means you are happy within yourself and feel assured in who you are. It enables you to speak up with your point in meetings at work, or when you are surrounded by peers and out and about. It can show you that speaking your mind is a good thing to do and help you to feel overall a lot happier in your life.
